Unusual and unique names for pets

One of the most famous cat names in history, Milo has been ranked amongst the most popular names for cats. Popularity for the name Milo came about with the 1989 animal adventure film “The Adventures of Milo and Otis”. We even believe there was a spike in the name being used for people as well… but don’t quote us.

We are not talking about the candy bar here, though it did have something to do with this cat’s name… About 13 years ago, my dad and I went to a baseball game with some of my school friends. When we got back home, my sister and mom were sitting in the living room with a strange look on their faces. It was as if they were hiding something. My dad, sharp as a nail, called them out on their behavior.

While grocery shopping, they came across a woman outside who had a box of kittens. There were all different color kittens, all meowing frantically. My sister begged my mom to have the small little black and white kitten. My mom (surprisingly) gave in without consulting my dad.

This little kitten, the size of your hand, came walking around the corner and grabbed my heart. Unfortunately, she did not grab the heart of my dad. He was not pleased and was not excited about having a second cat.

My mom knew that it would take a little work to bring my dad over to our side, so to start, the cat’s name had to be something my dad enjoyed. Since the cat was black, names such as Midnight, Spooky, etc. were tossed out, but for some reason, Milkyway came to my head. My dad’s favorite chocolate bar seemed to fit her perfectly. It is just something owners feel when <a href=”http://unusualpetnames.com”>naming your pet</a>.

13 years later, we are still blessed to have Milkyway in our lives.

Cat named Milky Way

You may think this is Vivien as they are almost identical, especially in photograph, but trust me it isn’t. Milky Way is about 2.5 times bigger and ways that much more. Plus, because she’s older, her hair is showing her age.

Vivien is our four year old purr muffin. We recently got her a automatic litter box and after using it, she bolts around the house of the next hour. She occasionally returns to watch it go into action and sweep her business away. She has an unusual name for a cat.

We went to the Humane Society to find a kitty. After 2 hours of seeing all the cats, we saw this tiny, sweet, positive, purring cat in a 1×1 box. We wrote down her ID number and listened to her background from the front desk. Tears came to our eyes because she had been through so much: pregnant, organo-phosphate toxicity, tremors, stomach infection from being spade, and was at the shelter for over 2 months. Our good friend turned to us and said this is your cat.

Now about why we named her Vivien… Initially, since she was a rescued cat, we wanted to have a name that symbolized us saving her. Secondly, we wanted a cat name that was feminine and French.

My girlfriend pointed out she looked like the actress from “Pretty Woman” due to the fact that she had thigh-high white feet resembling boots, and little white paws, like a nice French-tip manicure. But she couldn’t remember the actress’ name, nor had I seen the movie.

We went through a pet books starting with the letter “V” and came across Vivien. Just then, my girlfriend realized that was the name of the actress in “Pretty Woman”. The name Vivien means “alive” in French. At that point, we knew that this was the perfect name for our little lady.

Today we’ve assembled a boat-load of nicknames for her. Off the top of our heads some include “the Vive”, “Vivel Knievel”, and “Viva Diva”.
